Chapter 11

We all finished our meals quickly and Lin climbed back onto his scooter to ride it out of the cafeteria, and back to the elevator. It seemed like he rode it everywhere.

We followed him while Elizabeth rubbed her stomach and said, <<That was good. I like cooked meat a lot.>>

Monica nodded. <<It is very good. I did not know fire would make meat taste better.>>

<<When can we get more, Master?>>

Monica rolled her eyes. <<You just ate. You cannot be hungry.>>

<<You do not have to be hungry to eat.>>

"First thing," Lin said as he pushed the button to call the elevator, "is that Doctor Clarke is pissing himself wanting to get a look at you and these kaiju, so let's get that shit out of the way."

When the doors opened, I raised my hand. "Uh, sorry, I did want to know, is there somewhere my mother and Angelica can stay, just to get some rest? It's been a long day."

Lin rolled into the elevator and hit the button for the eighteenth and tenth floors. "Yeah, sure. Most of K-Force just lives here so the tenth floor is all dormitories. You can just pick an empty room and it's yours for as long as you want."

My mother smiled. "Thank you so much, Mister Lin. We appreciate it."

He just nodded and tapped on his tablet.

We got to the tenth floor and the doors rolled open to what looked like a hallway in an apartment building. Rows of doors with numbers faced us, and people walked down the hallway in black jumpsuits that seemed to be the uniform of K-Force, but also in underwear and pajamas. At the end of the long hallway, I could see a pool table with men and women gathered around it, and a big-screen TV on the wall showing football. It all reminded me of a college dorm.

Angelica gave me a hug and a kiss. "Let me know what happens."

"I sure will."

My Mom hugged me, too. "Thanks, kid."

"You got it."

I watched them go as the doors closed.

Lin looked closely at me. "You have a good mother. Where's your father?"

"Uh, he died. Car accident."

Lin grunted. "Wish my father had died in a car accident."

"Wow. Sorry to hear that."

"Not me. Every now and then, I check to make sure he's lonely, broke, and alcoholic, and I'm happy to say, he is. At least, the last time I checked. That was last week."

"What about your mother?"

"She's fine. Living in a mansion I built in South Korea which is as far away from me as I could get."

I wanted to ask what made him so estranged from his parents but I didn't want to pry.

When we reached the floor with the lab again, Lin rolled out of the elevator and headed back to the laboratory. The door to the lab slid open as he approached.

Clarke typed on a computer, but his eyes lit up as we came in. "Ah, good to have you back, David."

Lin jerked his thumb over his shoulder. "Yeah, figured you'd wanna give them an exam.
